A Level essay planning before you write

A strong A Level essay plan is a line of thought, not a longer version of the question.

Translate the question

Underline the command word and write the question again in your own language. Then note what a reader would need to see by the final paragraph for the response to feel complete.

Choose a provisional argument

Write one sentence that takes a position. It can change during planning, but it gives each paragraph a job. A plan without a provisional argument often becomes a list of information.

Give every paragraph a purpose

For each paragraph, record three things: the claim, the evidence or example, and the explanation that links it back to the question. If a paragraph has no distinct purpose, combine or remove it.

Build in a check

Before drafting, ask whether each point develops the answer rather than merely repeating the topic. This is a useful moment to discuss structure and evidence with a tutor.
